The Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) is the nation’s accrediting body for state, local, tribal and territorial health departments. PHAB seeks to advance quality and performance of public health departments by setting standards that define the expectations for all public health departments that seek to become accredited. National public health department accreditation has been developed because of the desire to improve service, value, and accountability to stakeholders. After attending the Special Olympics Inclusive Health Forum in May 2017, PHAB committed to using their national platform to advance this effort. Our Inclusive Health project is designed to assist health departments in thinking about including individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) as they prepare for accreditation. We have developed a Tip Sheet to get them started. But, to help them even more, we have identified a few health departments who have worked to:

  • Include individuals with ID in implementing a community garden
  • Plan and implement a health literacy program for individuals with ID
  • Develop a guidebook for schools to use when planning physical activity
  • Implement a tobacco cessation program for individuals with ID
