The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) seeks to transform the food system through leading-edge policy innovations for changes that benefit consumers and public health. For their inclusive health project, CSPI is developing guidelines for healthy food and beverages for individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) in group home settings, with input from the American Network of Community Options and Resources, which represents community providers of services to people with disabilities. Research suggests that food served in group home settings is often of poor nutritional quality and people with ID disproportionately face adverse diet-related health outcomes, like obesity. Once complete, the new guidelines will provide clear benchmarks and facilitate greater access to healthier foods for the hundreds of thousands of adults with ID living in group homes across the country.
